Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary.
Edgar Allan Poe was a perfect character to fit into the Living Dead Dolls world and after making a sample to see if we could capture his likeness the match up solidified it. Edgar Allan Poe is also the first time a LDD featured facial hair, but it was the hair on his head that proved the most challenging as Poe had some crazy hair going on
Since this was a two pack we needed to come up with a second doll to add with Poe. In looking at Poe’s vast array of work, his last complete poem written Annabel Lee, seemed most fitting. The challenge with her was to make a doll of a person with no real distinguishable features look interesting. Annabel Lee was painted with her eyes closed and a screaming face was painted over her own with glow-in-the-dark paint that only showed up when the lights were out. It was the first time we tried such an effect and it turned out quite well. We never announced the effect when the doll was released and I imagine quite a few people were in for a surprise once the lights went out.
A raven and book of poems were the accessories that rounded out this set of dolls. Edgar Allan Poe and Annabel Lee were the first Living Dead Dolls presents doll to be offered worldwide. Previously dolls like Friday the 13th pt. 3, Edward Scissorhands and Nosferatu were all exclusives.
Edgar Allan Poe and Annabel Lee continue to be a popular set of dolls and are still very sought after today. Perhaps it is time we gave this macabre author a re-imagining.
