Collector's Spotlight Vol. 19 (@maxfisch3r)

Welcome back to Collector Spotlight - a regularly irregular interview with a fellow Mezco collector where we get all up in their articulation, poke, and prod at their shelves, and learn more about how they pose, play, and display.

Today, we’re heading up north to Canada to celebrate Max (@maxfisch3r), a true innovator in toy photography. Max has a gift for transforming figures into the stars of unforgettable, one-of-a-kind scenes. Whether it’s a quirky setup or a jaw-dropping concept, his creativity knows no bounds. Max’s unique vision turns every figure into a storyteller, making his work impossible to scroll past. 🍁🎥

Q: What sparked your interest in capturing toys through photography?
A:
I joined an action figure subreddit and saw people putting Filmation Heman in everyday situations. Thought it was hilarious. At the beginning of 2020 I made a New Year’s resolution to post a photo everyday for a month. After that I was hooked. And then COVID came along and I really dove in cause there was nothing else to do.

Q: Which toy in your collection would have blown your younger self's mind, and what makes it so special?
A:
Indiana Jones and Marty Mcfly were my two biggest hero’s as a child so the Mezco Indy would probably blow my mind. Still waiting on Marty guys….

Q: What part of the photography process do you enjoy the most, and what makes it stand out for you?
A:
I love it all. I love it because I go into a flow state and forget all my problems. Sometimes I forget to put on music and then realize I’ve been in complete silence for hours. It’s healing

Q: What's a movie you watched recently that really stood out, and what did you love about it?
A
: Probably The Substance. I like a movie that I don’t know where it’s going. And this movie goes to some crazy places. Also visually striking and inspiring.

Q: Can you tell us about a tough restoration or customization project you tackled with one of your toys and how it turned out?
A:
I recently made a wig for Vapor. I had no idea how to go about it at first. I scoured the internet trying to buy one but to no avail. In the end a community member helped me out. His mom showed me how to make a wig from yarn. It took some combing and quaffing with polmade but I was happy with the bright green metal hairdo I was able to achieve for Vapor.

Q: If your toy collection had its own theme song, what would it be and what makes it the perfect choice?
A:
Dirty Little Secret by All American Rejects because my girlfriend has no idea how much these figures cost and I plan on keeping it that way ;)

Q: Do any toys in your collection have a unique backstory or surprising origin that others might not be aware of?
A: I recently purchased the 1/12 Adventure Kartel figures by Ashley Wood and threeA. I wasn’t collecting when they came out. To me they are a part of action figure history and little works of art. Probably one of the first 1/12 clothgood figures and I wish more people were aware of them.

Q: What inspires your choice of toys to spotlight in your photography, and what drives that decision?
A:
I usually shoot Vapor or Jackie. They don’t have a backstory that I know of so you can let your imagination run wild. Also their variety of head sculpts gives you so many options for different emotions and scenarios.

Q: Do you focus on collecting certain themes or types of toys? If so, what draws you to them?
A:
I really try to focus on urban and street-level figures. I want dioramas and accessories that I can use over and over again to really get my money's worth. And they suit my chill vibe and aesthetic.

Q: Which toys in your collection would form the ultimate all-star team, and what would you name them?
A:
Probably all my Roaches. The “Roach Squad”. There are just so many different talents and specialties there. They could handle any situation except maybe an exterminator.

Q: What's the most exciting part of being a collector for you?
A:
Keeps me busy. If I'm not taking shots I'm browsing the internet for new dioramas, accessories or equipment. If I wasn’t collecting I’d probably just be doom scrolling all day

Q: Got any insider tips for those just starting out in the world of collecting?
A:
Join a Facebook group for your favourite line. You’ll be able to avoid eBay prices and you’ll know when all the drops are.
